Roberta Abernethy was initiated in 1923 into Epsilon Chapter at Ohio State University. She initially worked as a secretary at the College of Art and Sciences at Ohio State but resigned in order to serve Delta Gamma.
She served as first vice president of Delta Gamma in 1938. When the Convention voted to create a central office, Roberta became the Executive Secretary of the Fraternity—the first paid staff member—in 1942. She was instrumental in equipping the first Executive Offices, overcoming war-time shortages when even the procurement of a typewriter was no small task.
For her many years of service, the collegiate award for excellence is named the Roberta Abernethy Award. The award is given to the collegiate chapter that best exemplifies in spirit and deeds the qualities of responsibility, cooperation, dependability, responsiveness, and initiative, qualities that Roberta herself had in high order.
