Anna Boyd was born near Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 22, 1856, the same day as her friend Mary Comfort. Her early schooling took place in Kosciusko, and after a year at school in Alabama, she went with her cousin Eva Webb and her friend Mary Comfort to the Lewis School in Oxford, Mississippi. Together, the three founded Delta Gamma during Christmas break in 1973.
Her education completed, Anna taught in public schools until her marriage to Daniel Ellington in 1882. They had four daughters together before Daniel died, leaving Anna to raise the children on her own.
After a few years in California to regain her own health, Anna returned to Kosciusko, where she helped see her daughters through school. The youngest was ready to begin college when Anna Boyd Ellington died, on August 12, 1907. She is remembered for her strong personality, intelligence, and quick wit.
